We study two quite different approaches to understanding the complexity
of fundamental problems in numerical analysis. We show that both hinge
on the question of understanding the complexity of the following problem,
which we call PosSLP:
Given a division-free straight-line program
producing an integer N, decide whether N>0.

The Sum of Square Roots (SSR) problem is the following computational problem: Given positive integers $a_1, \dots, a_k$, and signs $\delta_1, \dots, \delta_k \in \{-1, 1\}$, check if $\sum_{i=1}^k \delta_i \sqrt{a_i} > 0$. The problem is known to have a polynomial time algorithm on the real RAM model of computation, ... more >>>
